Self Assessment Document Checklist

Tick the situations that apply to you — self-employed, a landlord, dividends, and more — and this tool builds a personalised checklist of the documents and information you'll need, ready to download and tick off as you go.

Filing your first Self Assessment return, or just getting organised before this year's deadline, usually starts with the same frustrating step — working out what you actually need before you can even begin. This gives you a starting point tailored to your situation, so you're not hunting for a P60 halfway through your return. It's a general list, not a complete one for every possible situation, and nothing you select or enter is saved or sent anywhere.

This tool creates a general, personalised checklist only — it isn't tax or legal advice, and your own situation may need documents beyond this list. Nothing you select or enter is saved or sent anywhere.

Which of these apply to you?

Select everything that's relevant — you can pick more than one.

Your checklist

Always needed

  • Government Gateway user ID and password (or details to set one up)
  • Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) — a 10-digit number from HMRC
  • National Insurance number
  • Bank details, in case you're due a refund
  • Details of any student loan you're repaying

Self-employed or a sole trader

  • Total business income for the tax year (sales, invoices paid)
  • Records of allowable business expenses, with receipts
  • Business bank statements for the tax year
  • Details of any business assets bought or sold (for capital allowances)
  • Class 2/4 National Insurance position if already known

This is a general starting point, not a complete list for every situation — nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere.

How this works

  • 1Tick the situations that apply to you — self-employed, employed, a landlord, dividends, savings interest, capital gains or pension income.
  • 2Your checklist builds automatically on the right, grouped by situation, alongside the things everyone needs (your UTR, National Insurance number, and so on).
  • 3Download it as a PDF with a tick-box next to every item, ready to work through as you gather everything together.
